Conference program

To our great sorrow, Dr. Alexander Zhilyaev died on November 20, 2020, while fighting a severe illness.
He had been working at the Institute for Metals Superplasticity Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 1986. He defended his candidate's thesis in 1992, and his doctoral dissertation in 2002. His research was primarily focused on the physics of grain boundaries in metals, the problems of superplasticity, severe plastic deformation, and nanostructured materials.
Dr. Zhilyaev authored more than 170 scientific publications and several monographs. He worked in leading research centers in Canada, the USA, Spain, and the UK.

Since 2018, Alexander Zhilyaev has been a visiting scholar at the Nosov Magnitogorsk State Technical University in the framework of the Mega Grant aimed at international cooperation between Russian universities and world-class scientists. He created a laboratory that currently bears his name and is called Zhilyaev Laboratory of Mechanics of Gradient Nanomaterials.

It was Dr. Zhilyaev’s initiative to hold Magnitogorsk Materials Weeks annually, in spring and autumn. We will always remember him as a great scientist and an even greater friend.
